The Wink Howland

Memorial Scholarship Fund

The WHM Scholarship Fund was initiated in October of 2011, upon the passing of a well-known,
respected and intrinsic member of Saskatchewan Beekeeper’s Association,
Thomas Edward Winklin Howland.

Wink’s contributions to the Canadian Beekeeping Industry were extensive, including 10 years of representing Canadian beekeepers in the Canadian Honey Council. Wink was also a recipient of the Fred Rathje Memorial Award, which is presented to a Canadian Beekeeper who has demonstrated effective leadership in making a significant contribution to the improvement of beekeeping. His 13 plus years of serving the SBA and 5 years of serving the Saskatchewan Beekeepers Development Commission helped to grow and support the industry in Saskatchewan, which in turn supports the industry on a national level.

Wink received the SBA’s Life Member Award in 2011.

If you would like to donate to the Wink Howland Memorial Fund, please send a cheque, payable to Sk. Beekeepers Association and note "Wink Howland Fund" in the cheque memo section to:

Saskatchewan Beekeepers Association / Box 249 / Big River, SK / S0J 0E0

The purpose of the WHM Scholarship Fund is to support education in regards to honeybees, apiculture research and apicultural education in general. The fund supports the provision of a bursary or scholarship for undergraduates in apiculture and/or related field of study within a Saskatchewan college or university. The income from the WHM Scholarship Fund provides an annual award of approximately $1,500 for the successful candidate.

Eligible Students include:

  1. Undergraduate students entering or currently in a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a certificate, diploma, post-diploma, associate, bachelor, master or doctorate level of study who are pursuing a field of study that impacts the beekeeping industry in general;
  2. Undergraduate students who have completed at least 1 year of consecutive study in the same program and have achieved a minimum average of 70% in the previous regular session, as determined by the Award Committee.

Notes:

  1. Applicants must provide a statement of no more than two pages outlining how their course of study impacts the beekeeping industry.
  2. If in any given year there is no eligible candidate for this award, the funds will be held to fund an additional award in the subsequent year.

Application for this award will open once sufficient funds are reached for redistribution.
